Tikkun olam means "healing the world." In Kehila, practicing tikkun olam and teaching our families the importance of social action are priorities of Jewish life. Social action activities within Kehila involve our adults, Sunday school children, and teens.
Help the Homeless Month has been extended to December. The social action committee has adopted 20 members of Housing First Program. Please consider donating an item from their wish list. Click here to find out how you can help.
In recent years, Kehila members have organized to:
- Feed the hungry, by preparing and serving dinner once a month at the Shepherd's Table dining room. (See the Calendar for scheduled dates.)
- Clothe the needy, by donating and unloading used clothing at the Interfaith Clothing Center.
- Aid the sick, by partnering with organizations in Africa to serve families stricken with AIDS.
- Help the homeless, by participating in a fundraising walkathon.
- Preserve the environment, by cleaning and clearing trails and streams.
- Advocate for those in need, by writing letters to national, state and local leaders on timely social policy issues.
- Improve the homes of low-income residents, through hands-on repair and painting of their houses during the annual Rebuilding Together (Sukkot in April) weekend.
Community efforts also helped member families reach out to others by coordinating family mitzvah opportunities.
Upcoming social action opportunities are announced in the newsletter and via e-mails.
